Data Entry Employment

In need of data entry employment? Secure it now…

Recently, the economy has been in the news with so many job losses and many people unemployed. But if you’re someone who wants to work at home (or you’ve been laid off from your present employment), it might surprise you to know that data entry employment is among the hottest and fastest growing sectors of work at home jobs available. It’s especially useful, for example, for people who want to stay at home with their children (thus avoiding the cost of day care) but who still need to bring in a regular paycheck.

Where do you find it?

If you want to find data entry employment, the best place to start is on the Internet. Job sites such as monster.com, hot jobs.com, and so on will have these types of jobs listed. Usually, you will need a separate phone line and high-speed Internet access to do this, and you’ll need to commit to a given number of hours a week, such as 20. Many companies let you choose the hours you want to work and can be pretty flexible, but some may be more stringent than others as to how and where you have to be (such as being available by phone or instant messaging eight hours a day, as you would with a normal on-site job).

Some data entry employment is on-site and some is off-site

If a data entry employment position states that it is on-site, that means that you will have to go to that place of business do the job; this is not a telecommute or work at home position, in other words. It may very well be that after a time, you can negotiate with your employer to work at home part or full-time, but at least to start, you’ll need to go on-site. If you’re looking for these types of jobs, make sure you choose local employers who are close enough to you to be a relatively easy commute.

For off-site or “freelance” data entry employment positions, though, you can do these at home. Now, there’s a difference between jobs in the “work at home” variety — and for that matter can be true of some on-site positions, too. If a job says it is “freelance” or contract, that means that you are acting as an independent contractor and will be responsible for your own taxes, benefits, etc. In other words, the employer is not going to foot the bill for roughly half of your taxes as is true of regular employment.

However, if you are an employee of the data entry company (or whomever is hiring you), then that’s like any 9-to-5 job — even if you telecommute or work at home. That employer is going to be responsible for paying half of your taxes, any benefits, and may even foot the bill for some of your equipment, such as your phone line, computer, and so on. It should be noted that these types of positions as a work at home set up are relatively rare, and usually don’t happen until you’ve been working for an employer for a while and request to work at home. But they are out there and many employers are increasingly jumping on the bandwagon with telecommute positions versus in-office positions, because it can save them money; they can save on their own space costs, parking for employees, etc.

Beware of scams

You should know that data entry employment IS really employment and it does exist. However, there are lots of companies out there who just want to take your money and nothing more. So make very sure that the companies you apply to are legitimate and that you don’t send any money to any of them; if you must, make sure that they are absolutely be legitimate and that the fee itself is relatively small for simple administrative costs. You can check and see if a particular company offering these types of jobs is legitimate by going into your favorite search engine and typing in the words “complaint” or “review” along with the company’s name. The Better Business Bureau (bbb.org) is also a good place to check this type of information out.

What’s the bottom line? You absolutely can find data entry employment, and it’s a fast-growing industry that’s very in need of qualified candidates to fill these positions. If you want to work at home, this can certainly be a viable solution for you as well. However, make sure you do your homework and beware of scams; don’t send in your hard-earned money only to get taken for a ride. Done right, though, data entry employment can certainly be lucrative and can bring you a steady paycheck just when you need it most.
